  • OVERVIEW

The Building Division falls under the umbrella of the Planning and Development Department.

The Building Division administers building and plumbing permit applications which are reviewed for compliance with New York State Uniform Code, the Town of Islip Zoning Code and the Subdivision and Land Development Regulations.

  • ELECTRONIC FILING

Permit applications must be filed electronically. Electronic filing not only helps streamline the review process, it also has economic and environmental benefits by saving on paper and gas.

Please follow the directions detailed in the Electronic Submittal Process flyer located on our webpage under Permit Applications.

  • DROP-OFF and PICKUP BINS

Applications and paperwork can be placed in the Drop-Off Pail located by the entrance to the Building Division. Please make sure your contact information is included in your package.

If you are picking up a Permit or CO, the Permits or Records Department will notify you when it will be available for pickup in the Pickup Bin. If you owe any paperwork or fees, please visit the appropriate department to complete your transaction.

The Drop-Off and Pickup Bins will be accessible during normal business hours.

  • FOIL'S

FOIL requests should be submitted online; follow the directions at islipny.gov/foil. If you do not have access to a computer, you can pick up a form at the Records Office, and drop off the completed form in the Drop-off Bin.

FOIL requests will be processed in the order in which they were received and will not be processed at the counter.

  • PERMITS DEPARTMENT

The Permits Department manages the permitting process from intake to permit issuance.

  • RECORDS DEPARTMENT

The Records Section manages FOIL requests (for Building Division documents only), scheduling of inspections, collection of documentation and certifications, and final close-out of the permit by issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy or Compliance.

  • INSPECTIONS

Inspections can be scheduled by calling the Records Office at 631-224-5470, or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The inspectors cannot schedule inspections.

Inspectors do not hold office hours; if you need to speak to an inspector, you can reach them at:

  • PLANS EXAMINERS

Meetings are by appointment only; please call 631-224-5467 to set up a meeting. Whenever possible, meetings will be held via video or phone conference. A detailed agenda must be submitted to the Plans Examiner prior to the scheduling of a meeting.

  • ZONING INQUIRIES

If you have an inquiry for the Zoning Department, please check the Zoning FAQ’s to see if your question is addressed. If you cannot find the information you need, please complete a Zoning Inquiry Form, providing as much detail as possible, and email it to the Zoning Office at This email address is being protected from spambots. Meetings with the Zoning Department are by appointment only, and may be held via video or phone conference. Prior to scheduling a meeting with the Zoning Department, please complete the Zoning Inquiry Form providing as much information as possible along with a detailed agenda. Once a member of our Zoning Department has researched your inquiry, they will contact you.
